When God Took off His Royal Robe

Just wanted to post the poem I wrote at Christmas in response to our study on Covenant. I sent it to the ladies in my class and a few friends and I have been overwhelmed by the response to it. It was one of those things that I couldn't NOT write. It rattled around in my head for days before I got it down on paper, but I know that God is really the one who wrote it...I was just his pen.

When God Took off His Royal Robe

When God took off his royal robe
And wrapped himself in skin
He left behind the Father’s throne
To free us from our sin

When God took off his golden crown
To travel to the earth
He saw ahead the crown of thorns
That would bring about new birth

When God took off his sword and bow
And came as helpless babe
He knew the cross and bitter cup
Would be the price He’d pay

When God took off his belt of strength
And put on humility
He knew the weakness that he chose
Would save humanity

When God took off his royal garb
To obey the Father’s call
I became the recipient
Of the greatest gift of all

He covered up my nakedness
With righteous, gleaming robe
And placed upon my bowing head
A crown of purest gold

He took my weakness and my sin,
Gave me strength beyond my own
He armed me with his sword and shield
To make His power known

The beauty of the covenant
The Father’s master plan
The great exchange of holy vows
To fellowship with man
